About this project
In the heart of Gothenburg lies Universeum, an educational centre renowned for its public science exhibitions. This institution, which operates as both a Zoo and a Public Aquarium, first opened its doors in 2001.
As part of maintaining its facilities, the Life Support System underwent a comprehensive audit at the end of 2024 to evaluate its performance.
The audit, conducted by ATO Energysaving, produced a detailed report proposing highly sustainable solutions, thereby providing the Life Support System with the required enhancements to exceed its initial capabilities.
In 2025, the implementation of this project began and is set to continue over the coming years.

Getting more with less
Often, simplicity is the key: assess what exists and enhance it. This method has proven to be highly effective, particularly as philosophies surrounding Life Support System (LSS) designs have evolved significantly over recent decades.
In the Gothenburg case, however, the initial project phase presented additional challenges. Three exhibits needed to be integrated with one another, and the water in certain tanks was converted from freshwater to marine.
