About Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam
Blijdorp Zoo, also known as the Rotterdam Zoo or officially the Royal Rotterdam Zoo Foundation, is one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands.
During the audit performed in 2018, many options for improving the Life Support System efficiency as well effectivity were found.
The request: Effective filtration performance with energy savings.
Sand filter BEFORE: too narrow pipe work and non-functional “reflux” system
Sand filter AFTER: Optimized hydraulics (pipe work dimensions, velocities) and AFM as filter media .
Start energysaving
In 2019 the project was started with a severe upgrade of a sand filter: The sand filter internally was modified by pulling out ineffective backwash pipe work. The sand was replaced with AFM and the system was tuned. In other systems, other steps have been made, resulting in better filtration efficiency.
In summary, sand filters are now filtering effectively and efficient and are not being at risk to act as a collector.
