About SEALIFE Istanbul
SEALIFE Istanbul was integrated into a modern shopping mall, offering a spectacular view into the ocean world. The massive ocean tank, holding 5 million litres, has been a constant challenge for the curatorial team to maintain high water quality standards.
Part of the issue stemmed from the tank’s design with just skimming, combined with a big surface area. It causes a lack of water movement, making it possible debris could leave the tank.
In our plan, to direct debris towards the Life Support System (LSS), we made a design with 17 streaming pumps. And, improved water circulation, did ensure a more balanced water quality throughout the tank.
This solution also resulted in saving 700,000 kWh per year.
To summarise, through these efforts, we achieved both energy savings and a more efficient use of the LSS.
Saving 700.000 kWh per year
For Merlin Entertainment sustainability is a big thing and so energy use was also a point of interest at the time ATO Energysaving came for an audit of the LSS.
After having completed a thoroughly audit, ATO Energysaving advised on a new LSS set-up with Abyzz axial flow pumps and AFM glass filter media.
As a result, SEALIFE Istanbul did save over 3.000.000 kWh and we had a Return-On-Investment time less than 2 years.
Due to circumstances unfortunately the site has been closed since 1st January of 2025.
